Why did you want to become a pilot?
Growing up I was lucky to be surrounded by family members in different areas of the Industry, My great aunt was one of the first female pilots in Australia and my cousin was an aeronautical engineer for Airbus who lived with me during her training and I would attempt to read and understand her thesis, and with that my Interest in a career in Aviation really grew. The flying bug bit when I went Gliding at 13 and was fortunate that a teacher at my school started a program to get girls into Aviation. We started our flight training at 15 and I had my private licence at 17 before I had even driven a car, which could explain my driving!
How did you fund your training?
I received an academic scholarship for high school, and used the money saved to commence my flight training. I was fortunate that some of my mentors had their own light aircraft and I built the majority of the hours needed for my CPL flying them around Australia.
Was training a breeze or did you find it a challenge?
I found that the flying part of the training came relatively naturally however as I started at a young age I wasn’t always as academically prepared as I maybe should have been!
What was most challenging?
Covid! It has obviously had a massive Impact on myself as well as many of my Colleagues and friends. It has been a challenging transition to a different career, after being in this Industry for most of my life.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The people, the consistent challenge to better your skills, the technology and the fact I get to do what I love on a daily basis.
What is most challenging about your job?
In a training role dealing with highly professional Pilots you need to be sensitive to the way in which you critic their performance so as to not offend and instead improve their skill set.
Which Pilot Competencies are of most interest to you?
Workload management as this seems to have an Influence on most other competencies: if workload is well managed, then there is spare capacity to do the other competencies well, and vice versa.
Hopefully we start to see an improvement in the Industry soon and I would like to use my experience in recruitment and training to assist in getting as many of those of us back into the jobs we love so much!
