Why did you want to become a pilot?

The love of aircraft, aviation, flight. There’s nothing quite like it is there! There’s nothing more satisfying than landing a 60T jet full of people relying on you to get them to their destination safely. If I think about all the people I have flown for their business, to see loved ones, on holiday or starting out a new life, I’m overwhelmed with happiness.

 

How did you fund your training?

Savings and bank loan. Everything fell into place. Borrowing money was a tad more personal back then. I put together a business plan and presented it to my bank manager. She said she was impressed with my dedication and drive. My bank manager, who I’d never met before, but whom I’ll never forget, granted me my loan and simply tore up the paperwork that entangled my mother in the debt, if I was to be unable to pay it back. What relief, what luck and what a lovely human being my bank manager was!

Was training a breeze or did you find it a challenge? 

Training to become a commercial airline Pilot has had its high and lows, but thankfully mostly highs. I’ve never been the kind of person that does things half-heartedly, and that certainly made the training more manageable and enjoyable.

What was most challenging?  

Recognising when to take a break. It’s a long road to becoming an airline pilot: weeks turn to months and months turn to years. It’s important to switch off and do what you enjoy. Have fun and don’t feel guilty for having a day off from the books.

What do you enjoy most about your job? 

Meeting so many interesting people who have talents that often stretch beyond aviation. Of course, the views at 39,000 feet are one heck of a bonus too ;-)

What is most challenging about your job? 

Now I’m an examiner, it’s the paperwork. It’s crucial to get it right.
 

Which Pilot Competencies are of most interest to you?

Leadership and Teamwork - a long day at work is a lot of fun when we get this right.

Flight Path Management - the reward of a safe landing during a “dark stormy night” type setting. However, it’s important to recognise that all competencies are important.
