Why did you want to become a pilot?
Flying as a passenger from a young age vastly broadened my outlook. I took an extra GCSE in Physics to give myself the chance to fly and knew it was what I wanted to do from the age of 14. I was filling in my UCAS form in September 2001 which delayed my entry into the Aviation Industry and wearing glasses removed the chance of entering the military. It did nothing to diminish my passion.
I achieved my goal in 2006 qualifying with an fATPL from FTE Jerez and worked as a Flying Instructor before I moved onto Jet Aircraft with an airline in 2011.
How did you fund your training?
I re-mortgaged my mum's house to pay for it and used my life savings. Was training a breeze or did you find it a challenge?
I found it hard, but ultimately rewarding as I developed throughout the course.
What was most challenging?
Failing my Gen Nav ATPL Exam the 1st time and having to work twice as hard to pass it the second time.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I loved the travel, the movement through the sky, the ability to start in one place and end up in a completely new one, experiencing a huge variety of people, places and cultures and most of all the sunrises and sunsets.
What is most challenging about your job?
Managing the passengers when long haul flying.
Which Pilot Competencies are of most interest to you?
Leadership and Teamwork, Problem Solving and Decision Making.
I worked as a Science and Engineering Ambassador to Schools whilst on a Year in Industry and signed up to be a Peer Support Pilot with Thomas Cook. I have completed Level 2 Counselling and am taking Level 3 from February 2021.
I am really passionate about wellbeing and mental health management. I recognise the importance of having an outside influence; someone else to talk to and look over what you are saying with a slightly different perspective can make all the difference.
I am qualified UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Pilot in the UK and Ireland and am developing a business around the myriad of potential opportunities they present.
