Why did you want to become a pilot?
Aviation I feel was always in my blood. Having grown up overseas with my Dad working various ground roles for the airlines and then becoming a cargo broker. Visits to the cargo ramp and flight deck where a common thing, seeing a familiar face in there. I was truly fascinated and always wanting to get into the Captains chair. This stuck with me and never left then when I was given my first trial lesson out of Shoreham I was addicted.
How did you fund your training?
Self funded.
Was training a breeze or did you find it a challenge?
Definitely a challenge! I’ve always found the theory difficult without a practical model or seeing it physically in front of me. Dedicating the time and effort and some great tutors along the way we got there!
What was most challenging?
Ground school was by far the most challenging for myself. Dedicating the time and trying to absorb the vast amount of information in a relatively short period of time.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Where to start… The ability to say you have the best office view? Even when told numerous times no one will pay you to stare out the window at school… On the difficult weather or delay days being able to say we did everything we could, arrived safely and did the best getting everyone to their destination.
Inspiring the next generation is one of the stand outs for me! Whether that’s meeting an interested passenger or being able to help a pilot I’ve been mentoring and seeing their development is certainly a rewarding part of the job.
What is most challenging about your job?
Delays, the frustration they cause for all concerned. They can be for almost any reason and no one wants to finish a long day even later… It’s the flexibility and devotion we have to the job that gets us through these difficult days and we all do our best to reduce the delay but not at the expense of safe operations.
Which of the Pilot Competencies are of most interest to you and why?
All competencies are important. Seen so frequently in the application of competency based interviews. But the development of leadership, team work and management are those I am most interested in and developing having been a Pilot Manager.
