CV/ Cover Letter Writing, Pilot Competencies

Why did you want to become a pilot?

I always loved to travel and used to be that annoying child always begging to go see the flight crew before, during or after the flight.

How did you fund your training?

Combination of raised funds from working and inheritance.

Was training a breeze or did you find it a challenge?

Combination of both. I found the Instrument Rating initially a challenge, with the new scan rate and not flying visually – but through reading and back-seating lessons, slowly all slotted into place.

What was most challenging?

Transitioning from steam dialled aircraft single engine aircraft, to a full glass multi engine aircraft took a bit of transition – but soon became second nature. Oh, and the dreaded 14 ATPL Exams!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The variety. Every day is different, especially in the world of ACMI or charter flights. One day could be flying a premiership football team, to the next day flying a last minute charter for stranded passengers aboard! Also nothing beats the view of the sun rising over the Alps, or departing a grey and miserable day – only to pop above the clouds to glorious sunshine!

What is most challenging about your job?

The Avro RJ is a very old aircraft in comparison to more modern aircraft such as the Boeing or Airbus, so keeping my systems and procedures knowledge of the aircraft fresh in my head took a lot of background reading.

Which Pilot Competencies are of most interest to you and why?

Communication and openness. You need to be able to meet a colleague for the first time and know that you can communicate effectively and that you can trust them. Also, Situational Awareness – if that breaks down, the impact can be huge!

Additional Info:

In previous work, before flying, I have conducted mediation of staff to help reach common goals. I have also been involved in recruitment of staff, so can aid with the creation of CV / Cover Letters.
